3 Reasons Companies Struggle with Marketing Execution (and How to Fix Them)

Updated:

If you’re one of the 280,000 businesses worldwide that use the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), you already know why it’s so well loved. EOS provides a simple, proven framework that breaks through growth ceilings and restores order to chaotic leadership teams. (Plus, who can resist the ease and focus of an L10 meeting?)

The problem many leadership teams discover is that even with EOS in place, marketing execution is still one of the hardest areas to get right. This is because EOS creates a structure for growth, but it doesn’t execute your marketing strategy for you.

Why EOS Alone Doesn’t Solve Marketing

EOS is an excellent operating system, but it’s not designed to actually execute your marketing plan. It excels at helping organizations get everyone activated and on the same page. But marketing provides a roadmap of what needs to be executed. It asks different questions like:

  • What message will resonate with our ideal customer?
  • Which channels should we invest in?
  • What content should we publish?
  • How do we generate consistently qualified leads?
  • How do we measure ROI on our marketing efforts?

In our experience helping clients (and rolling out EOS at Hughes Integrated), we’ve identified three key reasons why companies struggle with their marketing and how to fix them.

1.Struggle: Their marketing is telling the wrong story. For years, marketers have believed that if they can just get their story across to prospects, the prospects will buy in. To be fair, we come by this honestly because we’re subject matter experts on the things that matter to us. The tricky truth is that this applies to your ideal client too; they care about their own story most. This means if companies crank out misdirected messaging or campaigns, they’ll end up competing for their prospect’s attention instead of breaking through.

Solution: Make your client’s wants and problems the center of your story. If you lead with empathy and demonstrate a genuine understanding of what your customer wants, then your three “Uniques” will resonate. It’s a simple shift, but it’s key to cutting through. Start by talking about the problems that your unique differentiators solve, and you’ll find your clients and prospects will start listening. Your Core Focus should influence every message you create. If your messaging doesn’t reinforce how you’ll effectively solve their problem, even disciplined execution won’t produce the results you want.

2.Struggle: No systematic process for connection. Once your messaging is right, it’s time to get it in front of them, but how? Your Vision Traction Organizer (V/TO) does a great job at dialing in on who you’re trying to reach, but it doesn’t specify how to actually execute meaningful movement toward them. V/TO helps you build your list of ideal prospects, but now you need to identify where they’re gathering, getting information, and learning. Your efforts should shift to positioning yourself (wherever they mostly hang out online) as the true expert with resources, tools, and training your prospect will find valuable. If you regularly give them solid, actionable content, you’ll win their attention and build trust.

Solution: Get strategic about content. Brainstorm a list of 52 questions your ideal prospect might type into Google or a large language model, then write or record content answering those questions. (This equates to one piece of content each week for a year.) When they go searching online for answers, make sure they’re finding you… and that you’re always delivering value. Treat marketing like any other EOS priority. Your quarterly Rocks might include launching a new lead magnet, publishing twelve educational articles, or improving website conversion rates. Your Scorecard should measure activities like qualified leads, organic traffic, or email subscribers, not just revenue.

3.Struggle. They feel reactive, and can’t seem to get ahead. Many companies are putting effort into their marketing, but it’s actually a series of disjointed “activities” instead of an actual strategic process. While some people may argue this helps you to be nimble, it also means you’re vulnerable to knee-jerk reactions and one-off efforts that don’t move you toward your long-term goals.

Solution: Become proactive. Instead of reacting to trends with scattershot campaigns, sit down together and record the results you want. When you’re clear on your goals, reverse engineer the activities you need to create a streamlined, strategic path to get there. What do you need to accomplish, and how will you do it? Create more content? Create different content? Now that you know where your prospect hangs out, maybe you need to adjust your approach. Instead of a polished article consider creating:

  • A blog
  • A LinkedIn post
  • An email
  • A short video
  • An FAQ
  • A downloadable PDF or e-book
  • A podcast topic
  • A sales resource

When you know where you’re going and how you’ll get there, it will help you to see everything you create as another step toward your goals. Focus on those early, weekly activity numbers to ensure they stay consistently on course, leading to your ideal outcomes.

Strong Marketing Execution in Action

Now that we’ve defined common struggles and how to combat them, let’s close by outlining the elements that companies with consistent marketing execution always have:

  • A clear customer-centered message
  • An annual content strategy
  • Weekly publishing habits
  • Sales and marketing aligned around the same goals
  • KPIs reviewed every week
  • Quarterly marketing Rocks
  • Consistent SEO (and AEO) improvements
  • A process for measuring results and course-correcting strategy

Companies using EOS already understand and value the power of systems. Now it’s time to apply that energy to your marketing.

When your messaging is clear, your content is valuable and consistent, and your strategy aligns with your long-term vision, marketing becomes less about scrambling for leads or being “relevant,” and more about creating predictable growth.

We’ve love to help you harness that EOS momentum and traction into meaningful marketing results. Schedule a free marketing consultation today.
